How to Become a Substitute Teacher in New Orleans
Substitute teaching is a great way for students currently enrolled in studies or in process of certification to become a teacher to gain teaching experience and gauge whether or not career in teaching is the right fit for them. If you hold a high school diploma or equivalent you may apply to become a substitute teacher year-round in New Orleans with the Special School District of the Louisiana Department of Education or New Orleans Public School parish. You will need to pass an exam to demonstrate a minimum 10th grade proficiency in English, mathematics and standardized achievement. An associate's or bachelor's degree will enable you to apply and bypass the examination.
Obtain your high school diploma or equivalent. You may also be enrolled in an undergraduate higher education institution or have already obtained your associate's or bachelor's degree to become eligible for substitute teaching in New Orleans.
Submit an application for employment to the Special School District of the Louisiana Department of Education. The application can be downloaded from the Louisiana Department of Education web page (see Resources). When applying directly with the Louisiana Department of Education you should specify that you are most interested in covering substitute teaching assignments in New Orleans. You may also contact the education parish within New Orleans that you specifically desire to substitute teach in to request an application packet with their requirements and submit directly to that parish. Complete preliminary testing administered by the Louisiana Department of Education or New Orleans Public Schools parish should you only meet the minimum education requirements of a high school diploma or equivalent. An associate's or bachelor's degree will allow you to bypass this testing. Should you become hired by the Special School District of the Louisiana Department of Education or New Orleans Public Schools board you will be considered a teacher-on-call (TOC) and be expected to accept substitute teaching assignments as they become available.
