How to Stop Water Pipes From Frezzing

Several preventative measures can be taken to keep pipes from freezing in winter.

Freezing water pipes in the winter can be an uncomfortable reality for many. When proper precautions are not taken, water pipes can become subjected to the cold weather and prevent you from accessing running water you may need to take a shower, clean dishes, drink or flush your toilet. To prevent freezing on your home's water pipes, take precautions.

Things You'll Need

• 60-watt light bulb
• Desk lamp
• Fiberglass installation
• Caulk

Instructions

1. Place a desk lamp with a 60-watt bulb under your sink or in an area of your home where there are exposed pipes. Never get underneath your home and try to heat pipes. There are combustible materials there, and only professionals should undertake this task. Make sure the desk lamp is facing the pipes so heat radiates in the direction of the pipes. Never place a lamp anywhere near combustible materials.

2. Let your faucet run very slowly to keep the water in the pipes from remaining stagnant.

3. If your pipes are protected from cabinet drawers (as they are underneath a sink), be sure to open the doors to allow warm air from your home to heat the pipes.

4. Insulate your home. Many home's pipes are located in the exterior wall, so insulating your house's walls will keep the hot air in the home from escaping to the outdoors. All heat that does not escape will be used by the walls to heat these pipes.
