Filing Form 4868 allows taxpayers more time to file their Form 1040s for the year, but not more time to pay their estimated taxes.

Form 4868 is for taxpayers to file an automatic extension on to file their tax return for the year. This extension gives the taxpayer an additional six months to file her tax return.She must still pay her estimated taxes due at the time she files Form 4868. Form 4868 is can be e-filed or filed by mailing the Internal Revenue Service Form 4868.

Instructions

      Enter your full name and address on Line 1. Then enter your Social Security number on Line 2. If you file jointly, your spouse's Social Security number goes on Line 3.

      Enter your estimated tax liability for the year on Line 4. This is the amount you think you will need to pay in total. Enter any payments you already made on Line 5. Subtract Line 5 from Line 4 to determine the amount owed. Place this difference on Line 6.

      Enter the amount you are enclosing on Line 7. This should be the balance, but if you cannot afford the balance, pay as much as you can. A penalty will apply if you do not pay the full amount due. You can pay by credit card, check or money order.

      If using a check or money order, make it payable to “United States Treasury” and include your Social Security number, daytime phone number and “2009 Form 4868" in the memo section.

      Mail the form and payment to the applicable Internal Revenue Service location. The locations are provided on Form 4868 instructions.

  • For quicker processing time or to save postage costs, taxpayers can e-file their Form 4868 with the Internal Revenue Service.
