Installing Wood Stripping Under a Tin Roof

It would be hard to find a roofing material that can compete with a tin roof for affordability or durability, making it a preferred roofing for sheds, barns and other utility buildings. In the past half-century, tin roofs have become popular for homes, as well, particularly in climates that are harsh to more conventional roofing materials. Installation of a tin roof begins with the wood stripping, called “sheathing,” following a simple method that insures proper support and sufficient attachment for the tin roofing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 6-inches from the end of the rafter tails on both outside rafters, called “barge” rafters, for the section of roof being installed with the wood sheathing.

    • 2

Snap a chalk line to connect the two marks made in Step 1.

    • 3

Place the first horizontal row of 1 by 6 wood sheather boards perpendicular to the rafters and the upper edge aligned with the chalk line placed in Step 2. Attach the 1 by 6 boards to the rafters with three 8d nails at each rafter. Cut the 1 by 6 sheathing boards as necessary to make certain that any end joints between the individual pieces are centered on a rafter for support.

    • 4

Measure 5 1/2-inches from the upper edge of the 1 by 6 sheathing row installed in Step 3 at each barge rafter and snap a chalk line to connect the two marks.

    • 5

Place a horizontal row of 1 by 6 wood sheather boards perpendicular to the rafters and the lower edge aligned with the chalk line placed in Step 4. Attach the 1 by 6 sheathing boards to the rafters with three 8d nails at each rafter. Cut the 1 by 6 sheathing boards as necessary to make certain that any end joints between the individual pieces are centered on a rafter for support.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 to complete the sheathing to the ridge for the roof section.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using a short piece of the 1 by 6 wood sheathing material as a spacer eliminates the need to measure the spacing at each row and expedites the installation.

  • For added strength and support of the sheathing system, it is recommended that the necessary end joints be staggered from one row of sheathing to the next to avoid multiple joints falling on the same rafter.
