How to Make Best Friend Necklaces

Celebrate the bond between your child and her best friend by helping the children make matching necklaces. Best friend necklaces are an excellent craft for birthdays, slumber parties or other special occasions. They can be personalized in many ways, so it's easy to create necklaces that are as unique as the girls themselves.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 puzzle pieces that interlock
  • Craft paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Hot glue gun
  • Satin jewelry cord
  • Sticker, rhinestones, glitter glue or other embellishments
  • Polymer clay purchased from craft store
  • Rolling pin or glass
  • Craft knife
  • Toothpick
  • Oven
  • Necklace chains

Puzzle Piece Necklace

  • Paint the two puzzle pieces a solid color using craft paint and a paintbrush. Allow the paint to dry before proceeding.

  • Write words on the puzzle pieces with letter stickers or glitter glue. You can write "Best" on one and "Friends" on the other or put each child's name on their necklace.

  • Decorate the puzzle pieces with small stickers or use a hot glue gun to glue rhinestones or embellishments on the pieces.

  • Cut two satin cords long enough to slip over each child's head comfortably.

  • Glue one end of the cord to the top edge of the puzzle piece and glue the other end of the cord to the other side of the puzzle piece using the glue gun. Repeat this for the second necklace.

Broken Heart Necklace

  • Roll your clay out flat to the desired thickness using either a small rolling pin or a drinking glass.

  • Cut out a heart shape using a craft knife. You can use a small cookie cutter or do it freehand.

  • Cut a jagged line down the center of the heart to make it look broken.

  • Poke a hole at the top of each heart piece using a toothpick. Make sure the hole is big enough for your necklace chain to fit through.

  • Bake the clay as directed in the oven. Allow it to cool, and thread a necklace chain through each piece of the heart.

Tips & Warnings

  • Supervise small children if using a hot glue gun.
