Your computer's power supply resides inside the tower.

If your Hewlett Packard computer stops working or intermittently loses power, you may need to replace its power supply. A new power supply will cost $30 to $60 and does not need to be made by Hewlett Packard. Once you have the part, you can easily perform the replacement procedure. You'll need to open the computer up, remove the old power supply and insert the new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your computer and disconnect all cables.

    • 2

Use your screwdriver to remove your computer tower's sides. Sometimes the side panels are held on by clamps you can remove without a screwdriver. The power supply will be located toward the top rear of the computer--it's the box-shaped part to which the power cord connects.

    • 3

Detach the power supply cables from all optical drives and motherboard devices. To identify all the cables that need to be detached, follow them from the back of the power supply to their endpoints.

    • 4

Remove the screws that hold the power supply in its place. Loosen the latches of any bracket system that might hold the power supply as well.

    • 5

Lift the power supply up and out of the computer. Read the label on the power supply to determine its wattage; your new power supply should have at least the same wattage.

    • 6

Align the new power supply with the screw holes and secure it in place with the screws and latches that held the original in place.

    • 7

Connect the cables from the new power supply to the same devices and parts of the motherboard as the old power supply.

    • 8

Replace the side panels on your computer case. Reconnect all cables and start your computer.

Tips & Warnings
