Build a Toboggan Sled

A toboggan sled, most often seen in Canada, provides you a suitable sledding option for deep snow and heavy drifts. Its design allows the sled to easily glide over the snow rather than becoming buried in it. By building your own toboggan sled you save yourself time and money, as well as give yourself the satisfaction of having built it with your own two hands.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 pieces of pine lumber, 10 feet long, 1 foot wide, ¼ inch thick
  • 2 wooden cross sticks, 6 feet long
  • 4 wooden cross sticks, 1 ½ feet long
  • Extra strength wood glue
  • 2 pieces of leather twine, 4 feet long
  • hole punch

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the two pieces of pine lumber longways next to each other so that they are touching.

    • 2

Lay the first 1 ½ foot cross stick 6 inches from the rear of the pine lumber, centered between the two pieces.

    • 3

Lay the second short cross stick 1 ½ feet away from the first. Lay the other two down in the same manner.

    • 4

Glue the cross sticks in place using the wood glue. Allow to dry.

    • 5

Center the 6-foot-long cross sticks on each piece of pine lumber and the shorter cross sticks and glue them to the shorter cross sticks. Allow to dry.

    • 6

Punch two holes into the front of the pine lumber in line with the long cross sticks.

    • 7

Loop the leather twine through the holes and knot.

    • 8

Roll the front end of the pine lumber creating ¾ of a cylinder.

    • 9

Tie the opposite ends of the leather twine diagonally through the front short cross stick and long cross stick where they meet, keeping it taut, and cut away the excess.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seal the wood with a water proofing sealant before beginning to increase the longevity of your sled.
