How to Read Ukulele Sheet Music thumbnail
You can read sheet music in the form of tab for ukuleles.

The ukulele is a Hawaiian stringed instrument whose name literally means "jumping flea." This instrument is somewhat similar to a guitar, but it is much smaller and only has four strings. Ukulele players can learn to play tab (short for "tablature"), which is a type of musical notation that uses numbers and symbols to represent musical notes and playing techniques. By learning to play ukulele tab, you can improve your playing skills and widen your repertoire of songs.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the four lines. The first or top line represents the A string on the ukulele. This is the highest string and the one closest to the floor when you are playing the instrument. The second line is the E string. The third line is the C string. The fourth and bottom line is the G string.

    • 2

Look for numbers on the lines. The numbers represent which fret you hold down. For example, if you see a “4” on the top line, it means to fret the A string in the fourth fret. A zero means to play the string “open,” that is, without fretting it.

    • 3

Play stacks of numbers simultaneously as a chord. For example, if you see a "3" on the top line with zeros underneath it on the other three lines, you would hold the A string in the third fret and strum all of the strings together to create a C chord.

    • 4

Strum downward if you see an arrow pointing down next to a chord, and strum upward if you see an arrow pointing up next to a chord.
