How to Become a City Building Inspector

A city building inspector certifies safety and structural integrity of buildings. In major metropolitan areas, the growing concern for public safety increases the demand for city building inspectors.The emerging interest in sustainable designs and environmental friendly construction adds to the demand for inspectors and the complexity of their jobs.

1. Educate yourself in the right area. City building inspectors are expected to possess a high school diploma or equivalent. College level courses in architecture, home inspection, engineering drafting and math are preferred.

2. Enroll in a state approved building inspection program. Depending on the state, you will receive official certification, license or both. Purchase the manual for the class. Expect to pay several hundred dollars for tuition. City inspectors are expected to learn area standards and building codes. However, they also receive functional on-the-job training once employed.

3. Develop a basic understanding of electrical, construction, plumbing and fire safety practices. Pass all training program requirements, trial inspection and written examination. In most states, you will have to pass an additional state examination to receive your certification of license.

4. Search for employment. Become an apprentice to learn on the job training such as city techniques, record keeping, regulation and reporting. Working as an apprentice will also enable you to establish connections for full time employment. Join professional organizations to network and take advantage of continuing education.
