How to Paint Outlet Covers
While the standard process of painting a room involves removing outlet covers before you paint to avoid getting paint on the covers, perhaps you would rather paint outlet covers to enable them to blend into the rest of your wall. If you paint the walls a dark color, painting outlet covers may be especially appealing to you. Paint outlet covers by preparing the plastic surface to accept the paint first. This will ensure the paint adheres properly to the surface of the outlet covers.
Things You'll Need
- Screwdriver
- Tarp
- Fine sandpaper (180-grit)
- Soft cloth
- Plastic primer paint
- Flat paintbrush
- Latex paint
Instructions
-
-
1
Remove the outlet covers from the wall using the screwdriver.
-
2
Spread the tarp onto a flat work surface and lay out the outlet covers on the tarp, spreading them out so they do not touch each other.
-
-
3
Sand each outlet cover with the sandpaper to make the plastic surfaces rough. Wipe down each cover with the soft cloth to remove excess dust.
-
4
Paint each outlet cover with the plastic primer using the flat paintbrush. Apply the primer in a thin and even layer, coating the front surfaces carefully. Allow the primer paint to dry completely before you proceed (consult the primer instructions for drying time).
-
5
Apply the latex paint to the outlet covers using the same application technique you used for the primer paint. Allow the paint to dry completely. Apply a second coat of paint, if you desire.
