How to Get All Characters on Mario Kart DS
“Mario Kart DS” is a racing game released for the Nintendo DS hand-held system in 2005. The game has a total of 12 characters from the “Mario” series that can be selected. Eight of these characters are initially available for the player to choose from. The other four characters must be unlocked. Unlocking characters requires getting all of the gold trophies in a particular Grand Prix with the correct engine class.

Select the Nitro Grand Prix with a 50cc engine class in the Grand Prix mode of “Mario Kart DS.” Only the Mushroom Cup and Flower Cup will be initially available.

Beat the Mushroom Cup and Flower Cup with a gold trophy for all four races. The Star Cup will be unlocked.

Beat the Star Cup with a gold trophy for all four races. The Special Cup will be unlocked.

Beat the Special Cup with a gold trophy for all four races. Dry Bones will be unlocked for use by the player.

Select Retro Grand Prix with a 50cc engine class. Only the Shell Cup and Banana Cup will initially be available.

Beat all four races of both the Shell and Banana Cup with gold trophies. The Leaf Cup will be unlocked.

Beat the Leaf Cup with gold trophies for all four races. The Lightning Cup will be unlocked.

Beat the Lightning Cup with gold trophies for all four races. Daisy will be unlocked.

Select the Nitro Grand Prix with a 100cc engine class in Grand Prix mode.

Beat all the races of the Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, Star Cup, and Special Cup again with the 100cc engine class. You need gold trophies for all 16 races. Your gold trophies from these races in 50cc mode do not count. Waluigi will be unlocked.

Select the Retro Grand Prix with a 150cc engine class in Grand Prix mode.

Beat all 16 races in the Retro Grand Prix with a gold trophy. This will unlock the 150cc Mirror engine class. This engine class has the player go through the tracks backwards.

Select the Retro Grand Prix with the 150cc Mirror engine class.

Beat all 16 races in the Retro Grand Prix with a gold trophy for each one. This will unlock R.O.B., the final unlockable character in “Mario Kart DS.”

Tips & Warnings
Unlocked characters will have the same number of karts available as the starting characters in “Mario Kart DS.”
“Mario Kart DS” has a mode called “Download Play” that allows Nintendo DS owners without a copy of the game to play in a multiplayer game. These players are assigned Shy Guy as his or her character. Shy Guy is not an unlockable character. The only time he appears is in this one game mode.
