Choosing Acoustic Guitar Strings
Many acoustic guitar players don’t give their strings much thought. Much more time is spent considering the tone the guitar itself may provide. Strings, however, are not created with the same blueprint. Regardless of the style of music being played, the strings you choose can have an impact on the sound being produced. Materials, gauge and winding are three aspects of acoustic guitar strings that each player should understand, whether playing country, bluegrass, blues, rock, jazz or folk.

Consider the type of music to be played. Strings are manufactured using a variety of methods and each offers a varying tone.

Understand the difference between round wound and flat wound strings. Round wound strings are cheaper but create more squeaking noise when sliding along the string due to their construction. Flat wound are more expensive but have a shallower profile. This means less squeaking and a longer lasting string as there are less grooves for dirt to fill.

4
Choose nylon strings if playing a classical guitar. This type of acoustic guitar is designed especially for use with nylon strings. Do not use other strings on this type of guitar as it may damage the neck of the instrument.
-
5
Purchase bronze wound strings for a brighter sound. Bronze wound strings are constructed using a steel core wrapped in a coil of bronze. Pick these strings if playing in a group or recording. Note that these strings can begin to lose their brightness after a few hours of playing.
-
6
Opt for phosphor bronze wound strings if seeking a warmer sound that will maintain its tone for a longer period of time than bronze wound strings. These strings are also manufactured using steel but additionally have phosphor added to the alloy. These strings are suitable for individual performance or for practice.

7
Pick strings made from silk and steel for a light tone and easy playability. These strings are manufactured using a core of steel, nylon filaments and brass dipped in silver coiled around the outside.
