Instructions

    • 1

Scrub off the surface rust, using a steel-wool pad. Scrub back and forth or in small circles to get rid of the stains.

    • 2

Clean the kettle with dishwashing liquid and hot water. Use a kitchen scrubbing brush for the more difficult rust stains on the kettle. Dry with a dish cloth.

    • 3

Apply a small amount of vegetable oil to the surface of the kettle with a paper towel. The application of oil helps “re-season” the cast-iron skillet, according to Mother Earth News.

    • 4

Place a sheet of aluminum foil on the bottom rack of the oven.

    • 5

Turn on the oven from 325 to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 6

Place the kettle on the top rack of the oven. Leave in for a few hours.

    • 7

Turn off the oven. Allow the kettle and oven to cool down. The kettle is re-seasoned and should remain rust-free for a few months.

    • 8

Remove the kettle from the oven. Store it as usual or place on top of the stove.
