How to Make Lamp Shades at Home

Save

A homemade lampshade can help personalize a room, allowing you to keep its color scheme without having to search for a lampshade that matches. You can make several lampshades to interchange whenever you redecorate a room or if you start to feel tired of the same lampshade. When changing out the original lampshade or installing a new one, be sure the lamp is not plugged in to avoid touching a hot lightbulb. Linen paper is sturdy, yet transparent enough when you poke holes in it to let more light through.

Things You'll Need

  • Lampshade you are replacing
  • Linen paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Pin
  • Drawing material (pens, pastels or markers)
  • Fabric tape
  • Determine the size of the new lampshade by draping linen paper around the original shade and marking the original shade's height and circumference onto the linen paper lightly with a pencil. Remove paper and cut to size, using your marks as guidelines.

  • Decorate the paper with whatever design you desire, using markers, pens or pastels, or leave it blank for a simple shade.

  • Poke holes into the paper using a pin to allow light to shine through. You may elect to create patterns with the pinholes, or simply make holes at random.

  • Shape the lampshade into a cylinder by taping the shorter ends of the paper together with fabric tape, taping along the outside of the shade.

  • Remove the old lampshade. Connect the new lamp shade to the lamp by taping the top edge of the shade to the lamp's structural wire using fabric tape, or mimicking the way the original shade was kept in place.
