Grapevine Wreath Instructions

Grapevine Wreath Instructions thumbnail
Harvest grape vines after picking the fruit.

A grapevine wreath can be an attractive addition to your front door, an interior wall or a garden fence. These wreaths are readily available at craft and discount stores, but you can easily make your own from fresh or dried grapevines for a fraction of the cost. Decorate the wreaths with dried herbs and flowers, seashells, silk flowers and a variety of other embellishments. The best time to harvest fresh grapevines is after the grapes have been picked and up until the first frost.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three- to 10-foot lengths of grapevines from the plant with pruning shears. If you are using dried grapevines, soak them in water overnight to make them pliable.

    • 2

Cut away the leaves from the grapevines with pruning shears. Leave the tendrils as they are a decorative part of the grapevine wreath.

    • 3

Cut a one-foot length of floral tape and set it aside.

    • 4

Hold the grapevine at the thickest end. Shape the vine into a circle or oblong formation three to five inches smaller than the desired circumference of the finished wreath. The first few circles are the inside circumference of the wreath; the wreath will grow as you layer the vines. Wrap a length of the grapevine twice more in the same circle.

    • 5

Hold the vine circle securely together at the end of the third coil with one hand. Wrap the length of floral tape loosely around the three coils to hold them in place. The floral tape will not remain on the wreath.

    • 6

Insert the tip end of the grapevine through two of the three coils. Pull the vine all the way through the coils. Turn the wreath a quarter turn. Insert the grapevine tip through two different coils in the circle. Pull the vine all the way through the coils. Turn the wreath a quarter turn. Insert the tip end through the first two coils and pull it through completely. You are weaving the vines into a wreath.

    • 7

Weave the remaining length of grapevine in and out of the first three coils to make the wreath. You can also incorporate a new grapevine into the wreath if you wish to make it thicker. Hold the thickest end of the vine on the backside of the wreath and begin weaving the opposite end through the coils.

    • 8

Cut the floral tape to remove it from the finished wreath.
