How to Install a DVD Burner on a Dell C521

The Dell Dimension C521 is a low-cost desktop computer with an AMD processor. The Dimension C521 is no longer on the market, but it was available in a variety of configurations when Dell marketed it. Some of these configurations include optical drives that cannot write data to discs. Some are even unable to read DVD-ROM discs. DVD burners are inexpensive upgrades, and you can add one to your Dimension C521 to give yourself the ability to back up large amounts of data or create home movies on DVD.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut the Dimension C521 down completely and bring the tower to a solid work surface that will not scratch the computer case. Place the tower on its side, so that the side panel with the "Dell" logo faces up. Face the existing CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive toward you. Touch a metal item to discharge static electricity from your body before beginning.

    • 2

Pull the sliding latch on the back of the computer tower. While holding the latch out, lift the side panel up and remove it from the tower. Set it aside.

    • 3

Reach behind the existing CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive and remove the SATA and power cables. Leave the cables where they are; you will reuse them with the new drive.

    • 4

Locate the small metal lever on the left side of the Dimension C521 tower, next to the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Pull the lever up to release the drive. While holding the lever, move the drive back toward the power supply until the front of the drive clears the front of the Dimension C521 tower, then lift it out of the computer.

    • 5

Unscrew the three Phillips-head screws from the sides of the old CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

    • 6

Place the screws in the same positions on the new DVD burner. Place two screws on the left side and the third on the right side near the drive tray.

    • 7

Place the DVD burner near the optical drive bay from which you removed the old drive, and attach the SATA and power cables.

    • 8

Lower the DVD burner into the drive bay, making sure that the screws on the sides of the drive go into the notches on the outside of the drive bay. After lowering the drive fully, push the DVD burner toward the front of the computer tower until it locks.

    • 9

Place the side panel of the computer tower so that the curved metal hooks on the bottom of the panel go into the two small holes at the bottom of the tower. Lower the top part of the side panel, giving it a final push to lock it.

    • 10

Return the Dimension C521 to its original location and reconnect the cables.
