A URL (uniform resource locator) is a protocol that is used to identify a website. According to Web Developer Notes, a URL includes the protocol (HTTP), host name (www), domain name and domain type. A web page's appearance, cookie preferences and your default home page are controlled by the browser settings. You can tell your web browser how you want to display content on a web page or change the current settings.

  1. Changing the Appearance

      Go to "Tools" and "Internet Options" in Internet Explorer and select the "General" tab. Click on the "Colors" button and customize the colors you want your web pages to use. Then press "OK." Click on the "Fonts" button to customize your fonts and press "OK." Click on the "Accessibility" button to ignore the colors, or font styles or sizes on a web page.

      Select "Tools" and "Options" in Firefox and click on the "Content" tab. Click on the "Advanced" button and choose your preferred font and text size. Select or deselect "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" and click "OK." Select the "Colors" button to customize your text, background and link colors. Then press "OK."

      Select "Preferences" from the Safari menu. Click on the "Appearance" tab and select the standard font, fixed-width font, font smoothing and default encoding preferences. Click on the "Advanced" tab and check-mark "Universal Access." Then type in the minimum font size for web pages.

    Cookie Preferences

      Go to "Tools" and "Internet Options" in Internet Explorer. Select the "Privacy" tab and select your cookie preferences using the slider. Then click "OK."

      Select "Tools" and "Options" in the Firefox toolbar and click on the "Privacy" tab. Then pick your cookie preferences and press "OK."

      Click on "Preferences" in the Safari menu and choose the "Security" tab. Then select the settings you want to use.

    Changing the Home Page

      Open the web page you want to use as a default whenever you open the web browser. Highlight and copy the website address in the address bar.

      Click on "Tools" and "Internet Options" in the Internet Explorer toolbar and select the "General" tab. Replace the "Home page" text box with the address you copied. Then click "OK."

      Select "Tools" and "Options" from the Firefox toolbar and click on the "General" tab. Replace the "Home Page" text field with the address you copied. Then click "OK."

      Select "Preferences" from the Safari menu and choose the "General" tab. Then replace the "Home Page" text box with the address you copied and click "OK."
