How to Build a Fireplace Wood Holder
Whether you have an indoor fireplace or you heat your home with a wood-burning stove, having a small storage box for your firewood is convenient and practical. With a few simple materials that you can purchase at any home and garden store, you can build not only a functional storage box but also a rustic piece of home furniture. The perfect size to hold kindling, small sticks and rounds of wood, this storage box can be built in a few simple steps.
Things You'll Need
- One piece of 3/4-inch hardwood plywood
- Circular saw
- Wood glue
- Power drill
- 1-1/2-inch wood screws
- 1-inch wood screws
- One 5/8-inch square of hardwood
- Two lid hinges
- Sandpaper
- Wood filler
- Support hinge
- Brass corners
- Four wheels

Cut the plywood using the circular saw into two panels measuring 11-1/2 inches by 25 inches. These will be the front and back panels of the firewood box.

Cut another piece of hardwood plywood measuring 12-1/8 inches by 25 inches long to serve as the bottom panel. Cut two more pieces of the plywood measuring 12-1/8 inches wide by 10-3/4 inches high. These will be the side panels of the box.

Lay the bottom panel of the box face down and dry-fit the side, front and back panels to the bottom. Using wood glue, glue the front and back panels to the side panels.

Secure the front and back panels to the side panels by drilling in the 1-1/2-inch wood screws. Attach all sides to the bottom panels using 1-1/2-inch wood screws.

Cut the lid for the box by cutting a piece of plywood measuring 13-3/4 inches by 25 inches. Attach a piece of 2-1/8-inch plywood to the back edge and two sides of the box. This will serve as a support for the hinge.

Cut the 5/8-inch square of hardwood into two 10-1/4-inch pieces. Attach each piece 1 inch from each side of the inside of the lid of the box. Secure with 1-inch wood screws.

Attach the lid with the lid hinges as instructed in the hinges' included instructions.

Sand all rough edges and fill all holes with wood filler. Attach all hardware as instructed in its included directions.

Tips & Warnings
If desired, paint or stain the firewood box before applying hardware.
Wear safety goggles while using saws.
If painting or staining, do so in a well-ventilated area.
Place finished firewood box a safe distance from the fireplace.
