How to Become a Paralegal in Canada

A career as a paralegal requires hard work.

Paralegals are responsible for assisting lawyers. With training in law and legal administration, paralegals take care of the administrative duties within a firm such as filing, preparing legal documents, organizing meetings and performing research. On occasion a lawyers may allow paralegals to handle simple legal procedures in small claims courts such as property disputes and disability claims.

Instructions

Step 1

1. Take grade 12 English with a final grade of 64 percent or higher.

2. Research universities and colleges that offer a diploma in paralegal studies.

3. Pass the legal and analytical skills test that is required before enrollment at your chosen university or college. This requirement is offered in various forms, ranging from legal experience (one year), completion of a previous legal program in Canada or a law degree.

4. Enroll in the paralegal certification program through the university or college of your choice. Students have the option of in-class study or online study programs. The paralegal program consists of a seven-week intensive program and a 12-week practicum.

5. Commit yourself to receiving high grades and working in a professional matter throughout your practicum.

6. Submit a request of certification from your college or university.

7. Research government organizations and law firms in the province you reside in or wish to work for paralegal positions in.
