How to Glaze Double Pane Windows

To ensure windows are properly insulated, at times they must be reglazed. Glaze also holds the window panes in place, and over time the glazing compound will wear down. Before you can apply new glaze, the old glaze must be removed. All the tools necessary for glazing window panes are available at a local hardware store. You will need to use a heat gun during the glazing process, so use extreme caution when handling this tool and always wear a mask, safety goggles and leather gloves. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape out as much of the old glaze as you can with the compound. Double pane windows have thicker amounts of glaze, so this may be slightly more difficult than removing glaze from a single pane window.

    • 2

Cover the glass with the sheet of metal. This will protect the double-paned glass from possible cracking and damage during usage of the heat gun.

    • 3

Soften the rest of the old glaze with the heat gun, moving the gun constantly around the perimeter of the window pane. Do not hold the gun in one place for an extended period of time, as this will crack the glass.

    • 4

Pry out the rest of the old glaze that you softened with the heat gun.

    • 5

Apply a thin string of glaze around the pane where the glass of the pane meets the frame of the window. Run the putty knife around the outside of the pane. This will push the glaze into the crack between the pane and the frame. Scrape off excess glaze, or wipe it away with the cloth. Allow the glaze to harden.
