How to Change an Accord Alternator Belt

The Honda Accord comes with a single belt known as a serpentine belt that operates the power steering, water pump, air conditioner and the alternator. The serpentine belt is kept at the proper tension by an automatic adjustment tensioner. When the motor is running, the crankshaft turns the serpentine belt around the accessories. As the serpentine belt is turning, the automatic adjustment tensioner keeps the belt at the proper tension. If the serpentine belt becomes damaged, it will have to be removed and replaced.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood on the Honda Accord and secure it in place.

    • 2

Look on the plastic cover that is on top of the fan shroud for the serpentine belt routing diagram. The diagram will give you the directions needed for routing the new belt onto the pulleys.

    • 3

Locate the automatic adjustment tensioner on the front of the engine. The automatic adjustment tensioner on the Honda Accord models is installed below the alternator and above the crankshaft. Use the bolt in the middle of the pulley that is attached to the automatic adjustment tensioner to turn the tensioner.

    • 4

Turn the automatic adjustment tensioner counterclockwise with the 1/2-inch drive pull bar and a socket. Then, slide the belt off the alternator pulley. Remove the belt off the other pulleys as well. Route the belt around each fan blade and out of the engine bay.

    • 5

Slide the new serpentine belt around each fan blade and onto the pulleys by following the routing directions on the diagram. Always start with the crankshaft pulley and leave the alternator pulley for last.

    • 6

Turn the automatic adjustment tensioner counterclockwise with the pull bar and socket again. Then, position the new belt onto the alternator pulley with your other hand. Release the tensioner and remove the pull bar. Look over the new belt to make sure that it has been routed properly.

    • 7

Crank the Honda Accord up and let the engine run for about 30 seconds. Then, turn the engine off. Inspect the belt again and make sure that the belt is still secure inside all of the pulleys. Close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the Honda Accord does not have a serpentine belt routing diagram, use a notepad and a pen to draw out your own diagram. Look at the routing direction of the old belt and drawn the same routing direction on the notepad. Use the diagram when routing the new belt onto the pulleys.

  • Keep your hands and fingers away from moving pulleys when the engine is running.
