How to Replace a Jeep Transfer Case Rear Seal
The rear seal in the transfer case of your Jeep allows the drive shaft to slide onto the transfer case output shaft while still keeping the oil in the case. The seal is metal on the outer edge with a rubber inner edge that seals around the drive shaft as it pass through it. The seal itself is a press fit but is not so tight that it can't be removed with very little effort. Replace the seal if you see a puddle forming under it when the Jeep is parked or if you see oil leaking out of the seal.

1
Raise the rear of your Jeep with a jack and position a set of jack stands under the rear axle. Lower the jack, allowing the Jeep to rest on the jack stands.
-
2
Position yourself under the rear of the Jeep and locate the four 10 mm retaining bolts that hold the rear of the drive shaft to the differential yoke. Remove the bolts with a wrench and set them in a safe spot.

3
Position an oil drain pan under the rear of the transfer case, then drop the rear of the drive shaft from the differential yoke and slide the front slip yoke out of the rear of the transfer case. Set the drive shaft aside and move to the rear of the transfer case.
-
4
Pry the outer edges of the rear seal out of the tail shaft housing with a small pry bar, working around the seal until it pops loose. Discard the old seal. Wipe out the inside of the tail shaft housing with a clean rag.
-
5
Position the new seal against the rear of the tail shaft, then use a seal driver or large socket to tap the seal into the housing with a hammer. Use care to ensure the seal goes in square to the housing. Drive the seal in until it is flush with the tail shaft housing.
-
6
Slide the front of the drive shaft into the rear of the transfer case, using care to not tear the new seal. Raise the rear of the drive shaft and position it in the differential yoke, then install the four retaining bolts and tighten them with a wrench.
-
7
Remove the oil drain pan from under the Jeep. Raise the rear of your Jeep off the jack stands with a jack. Remove the stands from under the Jeep and lower the jack, setting the Jeep back on its wheels.
