Taxpayers occasionally need to amend a tax return.

Taxpayers who file their taxes with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sometimes receive an additional tax form through the mail or realize that they have made a mistake once their returns already have been filed. When an instance such as this occurs, rather than panic, taxpayers simply can amend their federal tax returns by filing a Form 1040X and sending it to the IRS with a copy of their originally filed tax return.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the status of your amended federal tax return by contacting the IRS. Your options for contact include fax, mail and phone.

    • 2

Draft a letter or fax that outlines your request to inquire about the status of your amended tax return. Include your name, Social Security number, tax year of the amended return and contact information. The IRS will contact you about the status of your return when it becomes available. Mail or fax your letter to your local Taxpayer Assistance Center (see Resources).

    • 3

Call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Representatives are available to assist you with your inquiry Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time. Ask about the status of your amended tax return. If information is available, a tax representative will give you the information over the phone.
