Granite Sealer Instructions

Granite sealer can help slow the staining and aging of the stone.

Granite stone is durable and nearly impenetrable, making it an ideal material for heavy-duty areas such as tombstones and countertops. No surface is completely stain-proof, however, and wear and tear over time can create damage and discoloring even to this tough stone. Applying granite sealer can help to slow the effects of use and time, extending the life of your stone pieces. Apply the sealer as soon as possible to your piece, whether you're moving into a new home or having new counters installed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the granite surface with a damp cloth. This will help to provide a smooth, flat surface to white the sealer can adhere. Allow the surface to dry for 24 hours, or install a fan to aid drying and allow the fan to dry the surface for eight hours. Sealer will not adhere to a wet surface, and water can stay in the cracks in granite for up to a day.

    • 2

Apply the granite sealer per product instructions. Some products require you to simply spray the surface, while others may need you to wipe the sealer onto the surface. Follow all instructions carefully to ensure proper coverage.

    • 3

Allow the granite sealer to dry per product instructions; you may need to allow up to 24 hours for the sealer to dry. When the sealer is dry, buff the surface with a terrycloth bath towel or rag. Work in circular motions to remove any haze left by the sealer and to add a shiny finish to the granite.

Tips & Warnings

  • Different granite sealer products have different rates of application, as well as different protection times. Read all product instructions regarding application and how often to reapply the sealer.

  • Not all types of granite need to be sealed; darker colors or more dense stones may actually reject sealer. If you are unsure, consult with your manufacturer to determine if sealing is needed for your granite.

  • Sealing granite will not prevent all stains, nor will it prevent etching damage, such as rings from water glasses or heat damage from cookware.
