How to Remove a Cat Pee Stain from a Mattress
While most cats are litter box trained or go to the bathroom outdoors, if your cat is old, sick or stressed out, it may have an accident on your mattress. It is important to remove a cat urine stain thoroughly, as any remaining smell will attract your cat back to the location of the accident to urinate again. Chemical-based products are available to remove cat urine stains from your mattress, but you can successfully remove them using supplies found in the home. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Paper towels
- Spray bottle
- White vinegar
- Clean cloths
- Baking soda
- 1 tsp. liquid dishwashing liquid
- 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
- Bowl
- Small scrub brush
- Vacuum

Place a thick layer of paper towels on the site of the cat urine stain, if it's fresh, and blot up as much as possible. Change to fresh layers of paper towel as needed, and continue to blot until there's no further transfer of urine to the paper towels.

A spray bottle allows you to apply ample amounts of cleaner without soaking your mattress. Fill a spray bottle halfway with white vinegar and the rest of the way with water. Liberally spray the diluted vinegar onto the site of the cat urine stain on your mattress. Press a clean cloth into the mattress to absorb the vinegar spray and cat urine.

Sprinkle baking soda onto the urine-stained area on your mattress so the stain is completely covered.

A scrub brush helps get down into the urine-soaked fibers of your mattress. Combine 1 tsp. of dishwashing liquid with 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide in a bowl. Add this mixture to the baking soda on your mattress. Work the dishwashing liquid and peroxide mixture into the stained area on the mattress with a small scrub brush.

Let the peroxide and baking soda mixture sit on the cat urine stain on your mattress for 15 minutes. As the dish detergent and peroxide clean the cat urine-stained area, the baking soda deodorizes it. Blot your mattress with a clean cloth to remove the cleanser.

Vacuum your mattress to fully remove any cleaning agents. Allow your mattress to air dry near an open window if possible.

Tips & Warnings
When you blot up the fresh urine, place the soiled paper towels in the cat's litter box or wherever else you want the cat to go to the bathroom. Leave them there to signal to your cat that this is an approved bathroom spot.
You can remove old cat urine stains from your mattress, but you may have to go through the stain removal process several times.
