How to Void a Paper Check
The most common reason for voiding a check is to set up electronic banking for direct deposits or debit payments. Voiding paper checks is easily done, but it's important to follow the proper procedures so there's no mistake made or misuse of your personal check. Once you void that paper check, you can enjoy the convenience of electronic banking, saving you money on stamps and trips to the bank.

1
Print, using very large letters, "VOID" across the front of the check, using a pen with dark blue or black ink. The word should be capitalized and placed in the middle of the check at an angle across the line where the payee and dollar amounts would usually be displayed.
-
2
Write "VOID" again in capital letters in the box where the dollar amount would be. If you have mistakenly filled the check out with a dollar amount, you can write the letters over the dollar amount to ensure the check won't be cashed without your permission.

3
Write "VOID" one last time over the signature line. You can do this whether you have signed the check or not. This will further protect you from having someone else identify and possibly attempt to forge your signature if your checkbook has been lost or stolen.
