How to Compress & Convert JPG Files

How to Compress & Convert JPG Files thumbnail
Compress your image files on a computer.

A JPG, (also known as JPEG) is an image file commonly used on Windows computers. Because the file type is widely accepted you may load the content into an image editing program (such as Windows Paint) and save the file as a different format. It is also possible to compress the image file. The smaller file size resulting from the compression allows you to attach the image file and send it via email or other file-transfer method.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," "All Programs," "Applications" and choose the "Windows Paint" option. The software loads onto the screen with a blank white page.

    • 2

Click "File," "Open" and choose the JPG file you want to convert. The file loads and is displayed on the middle of the screen.

    • 3

Select "File," "Save As" and a "Save" window displays. Title the file, choose a location to save the file to and click the "Format" drop-down menu. Choose a format you want to save the document as (such as .gif or .pdf) and click "OK."

    • 4

Exit Windows Paint and navigate to the location where you saved the image. Right-click the file and choose "Zip." The Zip software window displays in the middle of the screen.

    • 5

Select a location to save the compressed file to and click "Zip." The zipped file is compressed and saved into the designated location.
