How to Pad Foam Cushions

Foam by itself tends to feel too firm for a seating surface. Upholsterers and furniture manufacturers add a layer of fiber fill such as Dacron to foam cushions. Employ the same techniques professional upholsterers have mastered to make your foam cushions comfortable and increase their durability. The cushioning layer helps protect the foam from breaking down. Follow basic guidelines to achieve effective results in padding foam cushions.

Things You'll Need

  • Dacron padding 1 inch thick or as preferred
  • Newspapers
  • Soft pencil or tailor's chalk
  • Scissors
  • Spray adhesive

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the Dacron on a clean work surface.

    • 2

Open a newspaper next to the Dacron to cover an area larger than the foam cushion by at least six inches in each direction.

    • 3

Line the foam cushion up with a corner of the Dacron, so that two sides of the foam cushion meet the lower and side edges of the Dacron.

    • 4

Trace around the other two sides of the foam cushion to mark the cutting line on the Dacron, using a soft pencil or tailor's chalk.

    • 5

Remove the foam cushion and center it on newspapers.

    • 6

Cut out the Dacron with scissors.

    • 7

Open the windows and doors. Direct the adhesive can's nozzle at the cushion. Spray the adhesive on the foam in a steady, sweeping motion, moving your arm from side to side over the cushion at a distance of eight to 12 inches while holding down the nozzle.

Tips & Warnings

  • To replace the padding on a foam cushion, carefully peel off the padding. Vacuum the cushion with a brush attachment or brush it with a stiff-bristled cleaning brush to remove dust and debris. If the foam appears dented or broken down, replace the foam.

  • For most applications, padding the side of the cushion that serves as a seat or backrest is sufficient. Pad both sides of the cushion for a reversible cushion such as a chair seat cushion.

  • Rinse the spray adhesive's nozzle under warm running water soon after using to help avoid clogging.

  • Follow all directions and cautions on the spray adhesive can. Keep aerosol products out of the reach of children. Do not use spray adhesive near any flame source or while smoking.
