How to Put Out the Pilot Light on a Stove thumbnail
Put out your stove's pilot light to save money.

If you'll be leaving home for a long period, put out the pilot light on your stove. This will eliminate the risk of a gas leak while you are gone and may even save on your utility bills. The amount of gas that flows to the stove when it is not in use is minimal, but these small costs can add up over time. You may also need to turn off the pilot light if you are remodeling your kitchen and installing a new stove. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the stove away from the wall so you can access the gas pipe that runs from the wall to the back of the stove, getting help from an assistant.

    • 2

Search for the control knob somewhere along the gas pipe. Consult your owner's manual for the exact location if you can't find the knob. Rotate the knob to the closed position to shut off the flow of gas to the stove. This will extinguish the pilot light.

    • 3

Push the stove back toward the wall until the front of the stove is flush with the kitchen cabinets.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow the instructions in your owner's manual to light the pilot when you are ready to use your stove again.
