How to Make a Quilt Label on a Printer
Quilters attach quilt labels onto the back corner of their patchwork to record important facts regarding that quilt. Besides the name of the quilt, quilters include the name of the person who pieced the quilt top, the name of the quilter if different than the person doing the piecing, the date the quilt was finished, and the location of the quilter's home. Some quilters also include special information regarding why the patchwork quilt was made or whom the quilt is being made for. Displaying and immortalizing all this information is simple with a quilt label made on a printer.

Design a label on Microsoft Word, the free download for Open Office, or label making software like Label Design Studio, which is free to try.
Microsoft Word has templates available online that are accessed directly through the software help search tool. Various online sites offer free Open Office label downloads. Label Design has everything you need included in the software.
Quilters can also design a label from scratch using any available program such as Works, Publisher or Adobe.

Cut a piece of freezer paper 8 1/2 by 11 inches. Cut an identical sized piece of muslin. Iron muslin to the waxed side of the freezer paper to adhere.

Set printer for thicker paper and hand feed if necessary. Print your label right onto the muslin side of the muslin-paper sandwich. Print multiples to fill the page and fabric at one time to conserve cloth.

Add any information that must be hand printed to the quilt label with a permanent pen made specifically for use on fabric.
Remove muslin from freezer paper and heat set labels with a hot, dry (no steam) iron using an up and down motion rather than sliding the iron across the surface of the labels. Continue to press at a setting as hot as the muslin will withstand for 12 to 15 minutes to insure the inks set and will not run when laundered.

Cut labels apart leaving 1/4-inch seam allowance around all four sides. Iron the 1/4-inch seam allowance to the back of the label. Sew label to back of quilt using applique stitch.
