How to Conduct Yourself in Court Pro Se

How to Conduct Yourself in Court Pro Se thumbnail
Be respectful to the judge when representing yourself in court.

Going before the court while representing yourself (or going "pro se") might be a viable alternative to hiring an attorney to handle your case and file the necessary documents with the court. You must have a clear understanding of your local court's procedures when it comes to filing legal documents, serving the opposing party and addressing the court during the hearing. If you have trouble understanding your local court's procedures or have difficulty with composing the proper court documents, search for an attorney for help in those areas.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the key points of your case that you wish to convey to the judge. Representing yourself in court can be a nerve-racking experience and writing down what you need to say will help you stay on track when speaking to the court.

    • 2

Dress in respectable clothing and groom yourself properly. Presenting yourself in a tactful way will show the court proper respect and will help your appearance of good character.

    • 3

Arrive at your scheduled hearing early and review your evidence and notes. When you are before the judge, state your case with facts and avoid babbling or skipping from one subject area to the next.

    • 4

Do not offend the judge by interrupting him or the opposing party. Keep a respectful demeanor and do not use an angry tone when it is your time to speak. Keep a pen and paper by your side to write down any untrue statements made by the opposing party, and point out any of these false statements to the judge (backed up by evidence) when it is your turn to speak
