The West Virginia code defines bungee jumping as a commercial recreational activity, involving a person jumping from a natural or man-made structure, while connected to some form of elastic material to prevent her from from hitting the ground. West Virginia has strict guidelines for operating bungee jumping attractions and has banned the activity from the annual Bridge Day festivities at the New River Gorge Bridge, after a jumper sustained injuries in 1993.
