How to Become a Computer Software Engineer
The world is increasingly being run by an evolving network of computer systems. However, these are not entirely self-sufficient. They must still rely on an army of human engineers and programmers, who develop and monitor them. Software engineers in particular play a critical role in this process. They design the software programs that run on every computer, based on what programs they find that users need. There are generally two types of engineers: computer applications software engineers, who develop programs for groups of people or individuals; and computer software systems engineers, who design programs for companies.

1
Develop your software engineering skills through practical experience working with various computer systems. This can be through an internship or co-op at a software engineering firm. This is critical even before you enter the workforce, as only the larger firms offer on-site training programs. Having some previous experience may give you an advantage over other applicants.

2
Earn a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or mathematics. As an undergraduate, take computer information systems, physical sciences and business classes. Earning an advanced degree may open up future career opportunities, as some more technical positions will require one.

3
Seek certification in your field, a process that can often be undertaken through your company. Regional product vendors, professional organizations and software firms also offer certification programs. Visit their websites for more information on how to get certified.

4
Continue to cultivate your skill set and knowledge base. Computer software and protocols are constantly evolving. You can enroll in a continuing education program through an online program, training school or even your company. In addition, attend industry conferences and seminars periodically throughout the year if possible.
