How to Report Tax Evaders to the IRS

How to Report Tax Evaders to the IRS thumbnail
Reporting someone to the IRS for tax evasion does not require you to prove it.

Tax fraud and tax evasion are serious offenses and can carry stiff penalties. Tax evasion comes in many forms and can include not filing tax returns, failing to report all income, creating false deductions, paying employees under the table, and any other attempt to avoid paying taxes or to falsely reduce taxes owed. If you are aware of someone who you believe is engaged in this activity, you can report him to the Internal Revenue Service.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the IRS website using the link in Resources. Fill out form 3949A-Information Referral. Enter as much information on the taxpayer who has avoided paying his taxes. The more information you can provide, the more likely the IRS has to locate the individual.

    • 2

Give as many details as to why you believe the person is committing tax evasion. You do not have to prove the evasion but you should give as much information as you have.

    • 3

Provide your name, address and phone number. You are not required to provide this information, but you will not be entitled to a possible whistle-blower award if you do not offer proper identification. A whistle-blower award is given in certain cases where the IRS is able to collect taxes owed.
