How to Make a Fishing Pole Organizer

How to Make a Fishing Pole Organizer thumbnail
Make your own rod organizer to safely store your valuable fishing poles.

Anglers who are serious about the sport often make significant investments in quality fishing gear. A quality casting rod and reel, for example, can easily cost several hundred dollars (as of 2010). As with any investment it is necessary to take proper care of rods and reels, particularly during storage. Leaning a fishing pole against a wall or laying it on the floor is a recipe for damage. However, it is not necessary to buy an expensive rod organizer to secure your valuable fishing poles. You can easily make a sturdy and serviceable rod organizer that can be customized to suit your needs.

Things You'll Need

  • Saw

Instructions

    • 1

Place a 3 foot length of 1 inch thick and 6 inch wide lumber on a sturdy work surface. Cut the wood to length, if necessary, with a saw or have the wood cut to length at a home improvement or hardware store.

    • 2

Cut three lengths of 2 inch thin wall PVC pipe that are 8 inches long. Position one of the 8 inch long PVC lengths on one end of the 3 foot length of lumber. Leave 3 inches between the side of the PVC tube and the short end of the lumber. Position the PVC tube so that the end of the tube closest to you is even with the edge of the lumber. This will be the bottom of the rod organizer. The tube will extend past the lumber on the top.

    • 3

Secure the PVC tube to the 1 by 6 lumber with U shaped pipe straps. Place one strap near the bottom of the PVC tube and secure it to the lumber with screws. Use a screwdriver to insert a screw through both sides of the strap and into the lumber. Place a second strap over the PVC tube near the top of the 1 by 6 lumber and secure in place with screws.

    • 4

Install a second PVC tube in the middle of the 1 by 6 lumber and a third tube at the opposite end. Use U shaped pipe straps and screws to hold the 8 inch PVC tubes in place.

    • 5

Select a location on a wall that will provide enough height to mount the rod organizer. Use wood or decking screws to attach the 1 by 6 organizer to studs in the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place additional PVC tubes and hooks on the 1 by 6 lumber to hold more rods or hang additional fishing equipment.

  • Also consider painting or finishing the organizer as desired.
