1
Make a design of your ideal tropical pool by looking at reference pictures and getting an idea of what the pool should look like. The shape of a tropical pool varies by personal preference and can be shaped in any way preferred by the owner.
-
2
Measure the backyard. Take measurements detailing the exact amount of space and the shape of the backyard. Measure the ideal area for the pool. The size of a pool will vary on the space available. Most pools will need a space of at least 12x12 feet, though measurements can be more or less as needed for the space and the shape of the pool.

3
Sketch out the backyard measurements and pool shape. Tropical pools can be shaped in any shape preferred and any shape that suits the backyard. Most tropical pools have a rounded shape.
-
4
Plan the ideal depth of the pool. The typical pool should have a shallow end that is around 3 to 3 1/2 feet deep and a deep end 10 to 12 feet in depth. Actual depth is dependent on personal preference.
-
5
Decide on the ideal material for the pool. Material will often be dictated by the climate and the type of pool. Fiberglass and plaster are common materials for a tropical pool. Turquoise or blue colors are ideal for a tropical pool.
-
6
Add a natural stone waterfall and stone outer area for walking on. Though this is not necessary, many tropical pool designs will have a natural stone waterfall or stone-like tiles to add to the tropical feel of the pool.
-
7
Add tropical landscaping to the design. Tropical landscaping, like palm trees, make the tropical pool unique when compared to regular pools. Tropical accessories are a good touch for areas where the climate is too cold for tropical plants.
-
8
Draw the ideal landscape design. Refer to pictures as necessary until the design can be drawn. The design can be as simple as drawing a blob, flower or similar small symbol and labeling it or as complex as drawing out the entire design in detail. Make a note about where the plants are located according to measurements so that it will be easily transferred from paper to the yard.
