How Do I Become a Firefighter in Iowa?
Firefighters' roles have evolved over the years, as they have been increasingly asked to respond to other emergencies, besides fires. These days, they may be called on to provide medical treatment to victims of natural disasters, like floods and tornadoes, as well as help in rescue and recovery efforts. In Iowa, as in many states, firefighting candidates can earn one of two designations: Fire Fighter I and Firefighter II. Both posts require enrollment in an accredited firefighter training academy, before taking a series of corresponding licensing exams.

Pass the two-part Fire Fighter I certification exam. There is a written and practical component to the test. An exam application is available for download on the Iowa Department of Public Safety website. You must score at least a 70 percent to pass the written portion, and you need a 100 percent on the hands-on section. The exam will test you on such techniques as how to initially approach the fire, handle hazardous materials and properly put out a vehicle fire. Upon receiving your certification, you must await placement in a nearby department with vacancies.

Receive a passing score on the Fire Fighter II exam. As the Fire Fighter I exam, candidates must receive at least a 70 percent on the written component, and a 100 percent on the practical section.
