How to Register a Business in Albuquerque

All businesses operating in Albuquerque must register with the Treasury Division.

All businesses operating in within the city limits of Albuquerque must register with the Albuquerque Treasury Division. There are two types of business registration: home based and commercial business. In order to register your business you must obtain a New Mexico tax ID number, complete the appropriate business application and pay the fee. As of 2010, the fee to register a business in Albuquerque is $35. Make your check or money order payable to the City of Albuquerque.

Instructions

1. Obtain a New Mexico Tax ID number by completing the Application for Business Tax Identification Number. This form is available on their website or by contacting the New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department at 505-841-6200.

2. Complete the application by providing your business name, contact information, federal tax ID number, business structure, list of owners and method of accounting. You also must answer questions regarding your type of business and anticipated business activities.

3. Submit the application to the Revenue Department at one of the four addresses listed in the instruction booklet. Once your application has been processed, you are issued a New Mexico Tax ID number.

4. Complete the home based business application. You need to provide owner information, mailing address and company information including your business structure. There is also a section regarding zoning enforcement and business activities. Sign and date the application.

5. Complete the commercial business application. You need to provide owner information, mailing address and company information including your business structure. There is a section regarding fire enforcement and the storage of flammable substances. There is also a section concerning zoning enforcement which deals with the business activity. Sign and date the application.

6. Submit the application and fee to the Treasury Division of the City of Albuquerque (see Resources).
