How to Measure Fabric by the Yard

How to Measure Fabric by the Yard thumbnail
Fabric is available in many thicknesses and textures for various projects.

Measuring and purchasing fabric is done in linear yardage. Measuring fabric by the yard involves measuring the fabric's running length. The width of the fabric does not calculate into measuring by the yard. Standard fabric widths include 45 and 60 inches wide, on a large bolt containing several yards in length.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a bolt of fabric on the left side of a flat surface or table. Position the bolt so the loose end of the fabric points to the right and is on the bottom of the bolt flat on the table.

    • 2

Pull the loose end of the fabric to the end of the right side of the table laying it flat near the table edge. Unroll the fabric off the bolt by turning the bolt over to pull off additional material.

    • 3

Stretch a measuring tape from the end of the fabric at the right tabletop end to the bolt.

    • 4

Read the measuring tape in full yards to calculate the amount of fabric for project needs. Hold a forefinger and thumb on the yard mark nearest the bolt of material.

    • 5

Pull additional fabric off the bolt to the right side of the table while holding the thumb and forefinger at the measured mark on the fabric.

    • 6

Place the measuring tape tip on the area of fabric between the thumb and forefinger and measure towards the bolt in yards. Continue this process until the total amount of needed fabric is measured.

    • 7

Measure the full yards first and then partial yards last. For example, if a project requires 3 1/2 yards of material, measure the 3 yards first and then the last 1/2 yard.

    • 8

Snip a slit in the fabric with scissors at the total yardage needed to mark the area. Smooth the fabric out on the table and cut the fabric across the width.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the fabric flat on the table for accurate measurements. Smooth out any wrinkles by brushing them out with a hand so that the fabric is very flat on the table.

  • Fold the measured fabric on the right side of the table into a stack so that it does not interfere with the unmeasured fabric that is flat on the table.
