How to Make a Paper Star Step-by-Step

How to Make a Paper Star Step-by-Step thumbnail
Make your own five-point star out of paper.

Paper stars can serve as beautiful decorations and can be a fun craft for kids and adults. There are many variations on the paper star, using the paper folding techniques of origami, but they can be complicated. If you're just getting started, try the origami five-pointed star, which requires two pieces of paper.
The folds are relatively simple and won't take long. For a colorful star, purchase some colored and patterned origami paper from a craft store.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one piece of paper with the colored side up on a flat surface. Point one corner of the square towards you. Fold in half from the right corner to left corner, forming a two-layer triangle. Crease well.

    • 2

Take the top layer of the left corner and fold it over to the right to meet the folded edge, forming a diagonal crease from the top corner of the triangle. Crease well.

    • 3

Turn the paper over, showing a non-colored triangle with the point facing right.

    • 4

Fold the paper in half by bringing the bottom corner up to meet the top corner. This forms a horizontal center crease.

    • 5

Open up the top flap and create a squash fold, forming a vertical edge aligned on the left side of the model. Now you have two triangles that meet at a center point at the bottom of the model. This completes the first half of the paper star. Set it aside.

    • 6

Lay the second piece of paper with the colored side down. Point one corner towards you. Fold the bottom corner up to meet the top corner, forming a horizontal crease.

    • 7

Fold in half again from right to left corner, forming a smaller triangle shape. Crease well, as this completes the second half of the star.

    • 8

Place a dab of glue or a piece of double-sided tape in the center of the triangle.

    • 9

Take the first half of the star that you set aside in Step 5 and position it so the top point of the shape faces you. Open it up at the point so you have two separate layers.

    • 10

Take the second half of the star (triangle) and position it so the longest edge faces you. Slide the triangle in between the layers of the first half, so two corners of the triangles point outwards on either side of the star. Fold the top layer down and press gently to secure the two pieces together (where you glued or taped).

    • 11

Add another dab of glue or tape at the bottom tip of the star (between the two layers) to make sure the star stays together properly.
