How to Treat Ixora Shrubbery thumbnail
Proper care is required to ensure the best chance for the continued growth of ixora.

Ixora shrubs bloom beautifully in a variety of colors, including red, yellow and pink. They flourish in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 to 11. Given the delicate flowers of ixora shrubs, proper care and treatment are required. The pH level for an ixora is 5.0, which is low for most plants. Ixora shrubs will grow well in a container on a porch or a landscaped bed with other plants that prefer acid soil. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the ixora shrub in "full sun most of the day, but some shade during the hottest hours," recommends Floridata. Make sure that ixora is not near any concrete foundations as the concrete could raise the pH of the acidic soil, causing the plant to not grow well. Mix one-third organic matter into the soil to maintain the low pH level of 5.0.

    • 2

Dig a hole twice the size of the root system. Place the shrub in the hole at the same depth as it was in the nursery container. Back-fill the soil around the roots and water well.

    • 3

Place a 3-inch layer of organic mulch around the shrub making sure the mulch isn't touching the trunk of the shrub. The mulch will retain moisture and give the ixora necessary nutrients.

    • 4

Water frequently and deeply to protect the roots during drought and to help them grow deeply.

    • 5

Apply a water-soluble fertilizer that is high in nitrogen during the grow season, advises Floridata. Follow the instructions on the manufacturer's label.

    • 6

Apply a horticultural oil spray once a week for five weeks to protect the ixora from aphids and scale insects, suggests University of Florida Extension. Apply late in the day to prevent the leaves from sunburn.
