Plumbers fix and install pipe systems.

The path to becoming a journeyman plumber in California is long but not overly challenging. Plumbers install, maintain and fix plumbing systems for gas, heat or water. They can work at schools or facilities, or perform services for homeowners. Plumbers must complete an apprenticeship that typically lasts four to five years before earning the journeymen classification. According to Indeed.com, journeyman plumbers can expect to earn $46,000 per year in 2010.

Instructions

    • 1

Search for plumbing apprenticeship programs in your California county using the California Department of Industrial Relations webpage.

Review the minimum requirements for each opportunity to ensure that you qualify. You might need to take a written or oral exam as part of the application. Most apprenticeships require you to furnish proof of a high school diploma and be at least 18 years old.

    • 2

Contact the appropriate person via telephone using the contact information listed at the California Department of Industrial Relations webpage. Make arrangements to take the written or oral exam during the phone call or to obtain an application packet.

    • 3

Complete your apprenticeship application and take exams, if necessary. The exams focus on basic written, mathematical and logic skills and not on plumbing information.

    • 4

Wait to be placed with an apprenticeship opportunity, which will occur whenever there is an opening. This might take several months.

    • 5

Begin your apprenticeship, which can last up to four years. You will work alongside journeymen plumbers and learn on the job.

    • 6

Attend required classes, which will be arranged for you by a supervising party. Complete all classes and all work hours to finish the apprenticeship. Receive a certificate of completion.

    • 7

Begin working as a journeyman plumber once you've concluded the apprenticeship. Per the California State License Board, journeyman plumbers do not need to hold a license, but they cannot bid on jobs with a value greater than $500.
