Simple Steps to Back Up a Computer
A computer needs to be backed up to ensure that important files and programs will not be lost in case of a computer crash. Fortunately, there are several ways to back up a computer. Generally, computer users should back up files at least once a week, although this depends on how often you use the computer and save files. Although backing up your computer may seem like a difficult task, there are actually several ways to do it, most of them requiring very simple steps.

Make sure that the "System Restore" feature is enabled in your computer. Click "Start," and then "Performance and Maintenance." Click on the "System" icon and select the "System Restore" tab. Ensure that the tick box beside "Turn off system restore on all drives" is not checked. Click "Apply," and then "OK."

Click "Start," and then "All Programs." Select "Accessories," "System Tools," and then "System Restore." Select "Create a Restore Point," and then click "Next." Type a "Restore Point Description," and then "Create." The restore point will then be created. If the computer slows down because of viruses, you can restore the computer to an earlier time (the restore point) so that it reverts it back to its earlier condition.

Use the "Backup Utility" feature in Windows. Plug an external hard drive into a USB port of the computer using the USB cable that comes with the device. The storage medium is where all the computer files will be saved. Navigate back to "System Tools" and select "Backup" from the list of options. Follow the instructions of the "Backup and Restore Wizard" until the process is finished.

Tips & Warnings
If you are only going to back up files in your computer, you can alternatively use an external storage device (such as USB flash drives) to back up your computer. Simply attach the drive to a USB port in your computer, and then wait for the computer to recognize the device. When the "Autoplay" window appears, select "Open Folder to View Files." Drag the files that you need onto the folder.
