How to Measure for a New Patio Door

Take a rough measurement of your new patio door. Use a metal tape to measure horizontally from one stud to the other. Another way is by measuring an old patio door. Do this by measuring the inside of the door frame from side to side. Add 2 additional inches to that measurement.

Measure the height for your new patio door. The opening of the door should be measured from the top frame down to the bottom inside area of the patio frame. Measure the middle and the left side of the door opening. Choose the smallest measurement and subtract 1/2 inch from it.

Take the width of the new door by measuring from left to right of the patio top frame. Also, the middle section and the bottom opening. Use the smallest measurement for the width. Keep these measurements written down for accuracy.
