Properly turning off the computer and monitor is a fairly simple process, but if you don't do it correctly it can cause damage to the hard drive and possible loss of needed information. The operating system of the computer has a built-in program for shutting down the computer system safely. Shutting down the computer and monitor within the operating system can help to maintain the program information as well as protect the computer hardware.

Windows 7 Shut Down Process

Left click on the start menu on the lower left hand corner of the computer screen to begin the shut down process for the monitor and computer.

Locate the menu to the right on the shut down menu that gives the options to log off, restart, switch user or lock, clicking on the log off button.

Verify that the computer and monitor shut down and that the power buttons on both devices go off.

Left click on the start menu in the lower left hand corner of the monitor.

Click on the turn off button on the right hand side of the start menu with the left click button.

Locate the menu choices to the right of the turn off button: stand by, sign off, restart. Click on the sign off button and wait until the power buttons go off.
