Become a good mystery shopper.

Mystery shoppers are employed as independent contractors by companies to evaluate a business's customer service. Shoppers can get paid and eat reimbursed meals. It's an ideal opportunity for students, retirees, a stay-at-home parent or anyone who wants to earn a few dollars in their spare time. Becoming a mystery shopper is easy but it takes skill to be a good mystery shopper. A good mystery shopper must be reliable, discreet, detailed oriented and able to multi-task.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign up with reputable mystery shopping companies. As a mystery shopper, you are declared an independent contractor, which means you can sign up with as many companies as you can handle.

    • 2

Perform the shop. Take notes discreetly and never in visible places. Notice employee interaction, name tags and physical descriptions. You will need to provide credible information in your report to support these findings. The more descriptive you are the better your overall report rating will be. Take notice of your building upkeep such as housekeeping and building functions. For example, pay attention to trash, unclean tables and dirty bathrooms. Finally, take note of the other customers and their interactions.

    • 3

Follow shop directions. If there is any doubt then contact your shop scheduler. Read the shop instructions carefully. Ask questions to understand the information your scheduler needs on the report. Memorize the report questions so that you will know what to look for in the store.

    • 4

Write thorough reports. Never base your report on biased information. Maintain accurate reports. Be descriptive as possible. Spell check reports and correct grammatical errors. Proofread your report for any inaccuracies.

    • 5

Provide clear pictures on mystery shops that require them. Refrain from taking pictures with a camera phone. Use a digital camera that takes precise pictures and has a flash so that receipt information can be accurately read.

    • 6

Accept constructive criticism from mystery shop schedulers. Don't argue or try to correct a mistake after the report is submitted. They are there to help you turn in a good report and confirm your payment after successful submission.
