How to Customize a Classic Car
Classic cars can be customized in a number of different ways; however, it is important to customize the car only if the classic car needs restoration or if the customization will not affect the value of the vehicle. Many classic cars are rare, so the factory-installed parts are worth more than replacement parts that may be used to create a custom look to the vehicle. Luckily, there are ways to customize the classic car without stripping away its value.
Things You'll Need
- White wall tires
- Chrome rims
- Car lift
- Impact gun
- Wrench
- Carburetor air filter
- Custom air filter bolt
Instructions
-
Add Chrome Rims with Whitewall Tires
-
1
Replace the stock wheels on the classic car with chrome rims and whitewall tires to create a brighter appearance. The rims and tires can be purchased at custom automotive shops that specialize in classic vehicle restoration and design.
-
2
Drive the car onto the car lift until the entire car is centered on the lift using a spotter if necessary. Lift the car up 4 feet off the ground.
-
-
3
Remove all of the lug nuts from the stock tires by placing the impact gun over each lug nut and pulling the trigger until the lug nut has been unscrewed. Take each wheel off of the car. Store the stock wheels in case the classic car needs to be sold or appraised.
-
4
Place each chrome wheel with the whitewall tires in place of the stock tires. Use the impact gun to replace each lug nut. Check over each wheel to ensure that it is tight in place. Lower the car from the lift.
Replace the Carburetor Air Filter
-
5
Pop the hood of the classic car by pulling the hood release latch located underneath the steering wheel. Keep the hood open using the metal bar located in the engine compartment.
-
6
Locate the carburetor air filter in the engine bay, which should be in the center of the engine compartment. This air filter is normally round with a chrome top.
-
7
Unscrew the single bolt holding the air filter in place using the wrench. The bolt is located at the center top of the air filter. Take off the air filter and store it in a safe place in case it needs to be put back on in the future.
-
8
Place a custom carburetor air filter in place of the stock one. Custom air filters can be purchased at most automotive retail stores and online. These air filters can come in different sizes and colors to match the classic car you are driving.
-
9
Replace the stock bolt with a custom bolt. Custom bolts can be of the classic car's make and/or model. Twist the custom bolt clockwise until the air filter is secured in place. Use the wrench to tighten the bolt carefully if necessary.

Check whitewall tires monthly for proper tire inflation. These special tires usually need 10 PSI (pounds per square inch) more air than standard street tires.
Wear safety glasses and gloves while working on the classic car.
Do not stand under the car while it is being lifted up off the ground by the car lift.
