How to Make Homemade Floating Candles
Instead of purchasing floating candles, you can make your own at home. The advantage of making your own floating candles is that you can customize them to match a theme for an event or your home decor. Making your own floating candles will also save you money. The possibilities are almost endless when it comes to decorating with floating candles. You can use floating candles to make simple centerpieces that look extravagant or you can use them to create a romantic atmosphere in your home.
Things You'll Need
- Votive blend candle wax
- Double boiler
- Candle thermometer
- Fragrance oil
- Candle dye
- Mini muffin tray
- Mold release spray
- Primed zinc core wick (2 to 3 inches)

Melt 2 lbs. of a votive blend of candle wax. This type of wax will typically contain a mixture of soy and paraffin waxes. Place this wax into the top of a double boiler.

Allow the wax to melt. It will typically melt between 150 to 160 degrees F. Once it melts add 1 oz. of fragrance oil for each pound of wax, and add your preferred candle dye. Add the dye slowly and stir it until you reach the desired color.

Pour the wax into the mini muffin trays. You may want to spray the tray with a mold release spray so that you can remove the floating candles easily.

Allow the candles to cool until a film forms over the candles. Place a candle wick into the center of each candle so that it sticks upright.

Allow the candles to cool completely. Remove them from the muffin trays, and trim the wicks to 1/4 inch. You can stick them in the freezer for 10 minutes to shrink the wax so that they pop out of the muffin tray with ease.
