Make personalized stamps out of craft foam.

Scrapbooking is a popular hobby and stamping is a key scrapbooking technique. With it, scrapbook enthusiasts can personalize scrapbook pages according to the event and people they are using for the subject of the page. While there are many sizes and shapes of rubber stamps and foam stamps available, making your own foam stamps for use in a scrapbook will make the memory of the event even more personal. Craft stores have all the supplies you need, and the stamps can be used again and again.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a design onto a piece of craft foam. For beginners, it is best to start with a simple design, such as a simple flower or leaf shape without too much intricate detail.

    • 2

Cut out the design with scissors or a craft knife. The neater the cut, the better the stamped image, so use care while cutting. Use a needle or ice pick to make eye holes.

    • 3

Cut a piece of plastic sheeting in a square or rectangle using a craft knife and a metal ruler as a guide. Make the plastic larger than the foam shape. Leave about a quarter inch border of plastic around the shape at its widest point.

    • 4

Center the foam shape on the plastic piece, and glue it in place. Allow the glue to dry before using the stamp.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to transfer a design to the foam for your stamp, trace it with a soft pencil using heavy lines onto a piece of vellum. Rub the design from the vellum onto the foam before cutting out the shape.

  • Use pre-cut, self-adhesive foam shapes instead of drawing and cutting the stamp image. If the foam shapes are thin, stack two identical shapes together to make the stamp easier to use.

  • Cut plastic backing from heavy-duty packaging, such as securely sealed packages containing small electronics. Use a craft knife and a metal ruler to cut it into usable squares and rectangles.

  • You can also use plastic from old CD jewel cases for the plastic backing on the foam stamp. Score the plastic with a craft knife as you would score glass to cut it. Snap the CD case in two along the score.

  • You can use wood blocks for backing on your stamp as well.

  • Use extreme caution when using a craft knife.
