Grant proposals are important documents that allow you to obtain funding from sources such as the federal, state or local government, private non-profit organizations and individual grantors. Using a sample is one way to get started with grant writing, as it allows you to see a finished product and gives you a solid base from which to start. You can use an existing grant proposal sample and use it to create your own.

Select a sample. Although the internet abounds with writing samples, many of them are either too generic or of substandard quality. The best sample is an actual grant proposal that resulted in the writer winning a grant. These can be found at several websites such as Proposal Writer. Make sure to select a proposal that relates to the area for which you are seeking a grant. For example, if you are seeking a small business grant, look for a sample small business grant proposal.

Analyze the sample. Figure out what was effective about the proposal. Note the writing style, layout, subject matter and general outline or flow of the proposal. Also note the sections of the proposal such as the table of contents and overview, and the font and format that the paper uses.

    • 3

Write your proposal using the sample as a guide. Do not copy the sample or copy the sample and change words. Make sure to write in your own words and use your own voice and personal style.

Review your work. Proofread for any grammatical or diction errors and make sure that your ideas have a logical flow. Read the sample again, and see how your proposal compares.
